Flexible working for all

CODE AMBER

The Children and Families Bill proposes that employees’ rights to request flexible working will be extended from the current right – for parents of children under 17 or, under 18 and in receipt of Disability Living Allowance and certain carers – to all employees with 26 weeks or more service.

Acas has prepared a short draft statutory code of practice which is intended to help employers deal with applications for flexible working from employees in a ‘reasonable manner’.  The code does not explain how employers should prioritise multiple requests from employees.  A non statutory good practice guide will be published with the code of practice. Closing date for consultation on the code is 20 May 2013. The change in the law is likely to be in force in 2015.
