Short leases are a common source of difficulty in the conveyancing process, causing delays, frustration and sometimes the collapse of a sale or even a chain. This is a particular concern in the lead up to the end of the SDLT concession for first-time buyers in March 2021. But many of these problems can be avoided or mitigated by taking early specialist advice and managing the risk from the start of the sale process, ensuring that the risks and delays are minimised.
