From today, business will be required to permit qualifying employees to take 18 weeks unpaid parental leave per child instead of 13 weeks. In addition, employed agency workers will also have the right to request flexible working on return from parental leave.
In our experience, not many employees choose to take parental leave because it is unpaid. However businesses will need to be aware that employees can now ask for more leave although employees are only able to take up to 4 weeks per year.
