At Morrisons, trainee solicitors benefit from working in a firm with almost 300 years of accumulated knowledge and expertise across some of the most important sectors of English law. This means that your period of recognised training is unrivalled virtually anywhere outside the biggest national firms. Our trainees receive one-on-one guidance from our dedicated Training Principal who will help develop a structure and learning process to suit your needs. The Training Principal also provides support throughout the period of recognised training. We recognise there is no substitute for real case work and, as a trainee, you will benefit from hands-on experience working alongside our most senior solicitors.
Morrisons will provide you with training and experience in at least three distinct substantive areas of English Law. Morrisons offers:
- Dispute Resolution
- Personal Injury
- Corporate and Commercial
- Commercial Property
- Residential Conveyancing
- Wills, Estates and Tax Planning
Our training is usually organised into six month ‘seats’ within specific departments, however, this can be flexible depending on your needs and those of the firm.
Your individual supervisors and mentors will provide you with practical day-to-day training and give you appropriate opportunities to develop your legal skills and knowledge. They will also help you develop practical skills such as:
- Client care and practice support
- Communication skills
- Interviewing and advising
- Legal research
- Advocacy and oral presentation
- Case and transaction management
Long Term Prospects
Morrisons has a track record of offering strong candidates positions as newly-qualified solicitors in their chosen specialist area. Successful trainees will demonstrate they are technically competent, committed, ambitious and entrepreneurial.
However, market conditions do influence our ability to take on trainees and it is therefore not possible to guarantee that a position will be found.
We usually recruit three trainee solicitors a year, with employment starting in September. We accept applications from both internal and external candidates.
We look for applicants with a good academic background and although we do not set rigid thresholds, a minimum of a 2.1 is normally expected. We welcome applications from both law and non-law graduates.
We look for individuals with personality, confidence, enthusiasm, commercial awareness and attention to detail. Being able to work in a team alongside all colleagues, from the most senior to the most junior, is also vital.
We operate an equal opportunities policy and all positions are awarded on merit.
Our selection process is by way of an initial selection, then followed by an assessment day, during which you have to complete a number of tasks such as:
- In-tray exercise
- Verbal Reasoning Test
- Numerical Test
We then make a final shortlist of applicants who are invited to an interview which includes a presentation.
Applications should be received between 1st December and 28th February in the year before the year in which the Training Contract would start. For example, if you wish to apply for a Training Contract in September 2016, your application should be received by us no later than 28 February 2015.
